How to Spot a Fake Remote Job Listing

Remote job scams have exploded over the last few years, and they don't look like the obvious "make $5,000/week from home" spam anymore. The good ones look like real job postings, with real-sounding companies and real-sounding titles. Here's what we personally check before any listing goes on the board — and what's worth checking yourself on anything you find elsewhere.

The pay is disconnected from the role

If a listing offers senior-level pay for entry-level responsibilities — or the range is suspiciously wide, like "$25–$85/hour" — that's a signal the poster is casting a wide net rather than describing a real, budgeted position. Real companies know what they're paying before they post the job.

They ask for personal information before an interview

Legitimate employers don't need your bank account, Social Security number, or a copy of your ID before you've even talked to a human. That information comes later, during actual onboarding, through a proper HR system — not a form linked in a job posting.

The interview happens entirely over chat

A real interview process almost always includes at least one live conversation — phone or video. If every interaction happens over text chat (especially on Telegram, WhatsApp, or Google Chat) and you're never asked to get on a call, be skeptical.

You're asked to buy your own equipment upfront

"We'll reimburse you" for a laptop or software you have to buy yourself, before you've received a single paycheck, is one of the oldest scams in the book. Real employers either ship you equipment or reimburse after the fact with documentation, not before you've started.

The company barely exists online

• No LinkedIn page, or one with almost no employees listed
• No reviews on Glassdoor or Indeed, good or bad
• A website that was registered within the last few months
• Stock photos standing in for an "our team" page

None of these alone is disqualifying, but two or three together is a real red flag.

That's slower than just importing a feed of scraped postings. It's also the entire reason people trust the board.
